Data Center – Web Services Tier
Since web servers are typically connected to a load balancer or firewall appliance, to be useful the interconnect between them must deliver enhanced performance even if it is installed on just one side of this connection.
Before EtherFabric, no other high performance interconnect technology has been able to accelerate performance in an single-sided configuration. Since both sides of the connection use TCP/IP over Ethernet, EtherFabric is perfectly suited to accelerate the web services tier.
Because a TCP/IP connection is created each time a new web page is opened, and is torn down when the page is closed, the connection setup and teardown rate supported by each individual web server is critical to effective operation of the data center.
The dramatically enhanced CPU efficiency provided by EtherFabric allows each web server to support a significant increase in connection rate and user load. A consumer-facing e-commerce site could utilize thousands of web servers to service the consumers accessing the site, here the performance gain provided by EtherFabric provides enormous economic return. The lower latency and additional bandwidth result directly into increased transaction capacity which means more revenue.
Data Center – Application Server Tier
The application server tier of the data center typically is where a company’s unique capabilities are implemented to add value and differentiate themselves from their competitors. The application tier servers run the mission critical, proprietary applications that deliver the key value-added differentiation of a company. Whether these applications help shoppers find the lowest prices, or decode genetic DNA information, the applications contain the intellectual property of an organization and the application server tier represents the brain of the data center.
The CPU efficiency benefits of EtherFabric allow 2x or more CPU cycles to be applied to these mission critical applications. And EtherFabric bandwidth advantages provide additional performance boost to those applications sending and receiving large data blocks.
Data Center – Database Server Tier
The database server tier is where key backend technology is implemented. Companies optimize their database design and query capabilities to match not only their own business needs, but also those of their customers. Since the database tier services all requests for data as a result of transactions originating in the web server and application server tiers, the database must handle a wide variety of request types. Some queries can result in very small responses, such as an airline flight confirmation, or in very large responses, such as those that typically result from data mining applications.
EtherFabric’s CPU efficiency enables database servers to process requests more quickly, while the low latency enables quicker response times for delivery of the data once the query is complete. The bandwidth benefits of EtherFabric allow queries resulting in large messages to be returned to the user in far less time.
