Bandel Carano – Oak Investment Partners
Bandel L. Carano joined Oak in 1985 after two years with Morgan Stanley's Venture Capital Group. He was responsible for advising Morgan Stanley on high-tech new business development, as well as sponsoring venture investments. At Oak, Bandel has invested in companies with emphasis on design automation (Centric Software, Interconnectix, Parametric, Synopsys and Tensilica); telecommunications (2Wire, Airspan, Avici, CommVerge, CoreTek, FiberTower, General Bandwidth, Mahi Networks, Metawave, NeoPhotonics, Netopia, PictureTel, Polycom, PulsePoint, Qtera, Relion, Sentient Networks, Tegic, Trapeze, Wellfleet, White Rock Networks and WFI); software (Entropic, Illustra/Informix, Sybase, TeleAtlas and Visto); and advanced semiconductors (Actel, Airgo, CommQuest, Kenet, Level 5, nLight, Resonext, SMIC, SolarFlare, Stretch, Synaptics, and Virata). Bandel received BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He currently serves on the Investment Advisory Board of the Stanford Engineering Venture Fund.
Charles Cotton – Chairman of the Board
Charles Cotton is a director of Library House
and business angel. Between December 2001 and December 2002
he was Chairman of GlobespanVirata Inc (NASDAQ: GSPN), headquartered
in Red Bank, New Jersey, which resulted from the December 2001
merger between Virata Corp. with GlobeSpan Inc. The combination
of the two companies formed the world’s largest DSL chipset
and software company. Prior to the merger, Charles was Chief
Executive Officer of Virata Corp. which pioneered the Integrated
Software on Silicon (ISOS) business model that combines
a complete licensed software stack with ASSPs to address high-growth
vertical markets. While at Virata, Charles re-directed the business
from its networking equipment origins and led the transition
of the original Cambridge, UK company, to a Delaware corporation,
prior to taking the company public on the NASDAQ market in November
1999. Charles raised $674 million through five financing rounds,
increased revenues from $12 million in 1999 to $119 million
in 2000, executed five acquisitions and established a venture
fund, which made four investments in technology businesses.
Charles was previously CEO of London-based Shandwick Europe,
the public relations firm. Prior to that he was President of
Thermal Scientific Inc, based in Boston Mass., and Director
of Thermal Scientific Ltd, the London Stock Exchange listed
specialist engineering firm. He moved to Cambridge, England
in 1983 to become Sales and Marketing Director at Sinclair Research
Ltd, the low-cost home and education computer company, founded
by entrepreneur Sir Clive Sinclair. Before that he held senior
Operations, Finance, Marketing and Product Planning positions
in the motor industry for British Leyland Motor Corporation
and Ford.
Charles holds a BA Hons. in Physics from Oxford University.
Joe Golden – Accel Partners
Prior to joining Accel, Joe was the Managing Director of Cisco Systems Business Development and Strategic Alliances for Europe, Middle East and Africa, based in London and reporting directly to Mike Volpi, the Chief Strategy Officer at Cisco. During Joe's tenure in this position, Cisco invested over $5 billion in Europe in strategic acquisitions and technology start-ups. Joe was also active on multiple international boards, including Italtel S.p.A. and Riversoft PLC.
Prior to this assignment, Joe held various senior management positions at Cisco, with responsibilities ranging from driving service solutions for large franchise carriers such as AT&T and Deutsche Telekom to Vice President of Marketing in the Multiservice Switching Business Unit.
Before joining Cisco, Joe was the Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Marketing for Ardent Communications, a start-up acquired by Cisco in 1997. Prior to joining Ardent, Joe was the Managing Director of Europe for Ascom Timeplex in Bern, Switzerland. Additionally, Joe has held European and U.S.-based senior management positions with Raynet G.m.b.H. (acquired by Ericsson), ROLM (a Siemens company) and Silicon Systems (part of the Texas Instruments Storage Products Group).
Joe holds a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School.
Hermann Hauser PhD – Amadeus Capital Partners
A co-founder of Amadeus Capital Partners Limited, Hermann has a long history of success as a venture capitalist and entrepreneur. Companies he founded or co-founded include Acorn Computers, ActiveBook Company, Virata, Net Products, NetChannel and Cambridge Network Limited. He was a founder director of IQ (bio), IXI Limited, Vocalis, SynGenix, Advanced Displays Limited, Electronic Share Information Limited And E*Trade UK. However, Hermann’s influence on the European computer and technology industry cannot be reflected in lists. Thanks to his work in the nascent personal computer industry in the UK in the 1980s, through his work at Acorn Computers and as vice president of research at Olivetti, Hermann has been instrumental in a vast range of industry developments.
At Amadeus, Hermann continues to oversee a broad range of early and later stage developing technology companies, providing the benefit of his experience of turning scientific advances into real-world technology products to a new generation of entrepreneurs.
Hermann holds an MA in Physics from Vienna University and a PhD in Physics from the Cavendish Laboratory at King’s College, Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and the Royal Academy of Engineering, an Honorary Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge, Hermann holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Bath, Loughborough and from Anglia Polytechnic, and was awarded an Honorary CBE for “innovative service to the UK enterprise sector” in 2001.
Andrew Hopper PhD
Professor Andrew Hopper is Head of the Computer Laboratory
at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Corpus
Christi College. He was Managing Director of AT&T Laboratories
in Cambridge, U.K., previously known as Olivetti Research Laboratories.
Leveraging an extensive research team, Andy co-founded 11 high-technology
businesses including Virata Corporation, Acorn Computer Ltd.,
Internet Pro Video Limited and Cambridge Broadband Limited.
Virata Corporation was publicly traded on the Nasdaq stock exchange
and Acorn was publicly traded on the London stock exchange.
Andy holds a BS degree from the University of Wales and a PhD
from the University of Cambridge. He was elected a Fellow
of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1996.
